Becoming Better Bible Readers

From a young adults retreat organised by my church in May 2017.

Why is there a need to read the Bible well?

#1 There is a right way to read the Bible.

2 Tim 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,3 a worker bwho has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

#2 When we read the Bible rightly, we gain life and immortality.

2 Tim 1:10 and which now has ybeen manifested through zthe appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, awho abolished death and bbrought life and cimmortality to light through the gospel, Continue reading “Becoming Better Bible Readers”

Baptism Testimony

Do work on your testimony, about half an A4 page, based on the 2 questions:
1. Why do you want to get baptised?
2. How has Christ impacted your life?

1. I want to be baptised because it is instructed of those who believe in Jesus.

2. In the past, I thought I could live without God (or gods, for the matter). After all, what if there weren’t any of these things? Wouldn’t my life then misguided? When I tried to lead a life that was essentially god-less, I realised two things about myself. Continue reading “Baptism Testimony”

On Imperfection

I thought I saw an ocean, of logic and reason. But I was mistaken; there was nothing there, nothing more than a cesspool of self-righteousness.

If I were man falling off a cliff, I’d grab at anything, everything. Until I realise that I can’t do it on my own.

Perhaps then, I’ll try convincing myself that I was imperfect to begin with. Oh wells, we all know I’m imperfect, right?  Continue reading “On Imperfection”

Paradise

How I counsel, and what it says about me

How do you counsel someone who’s hypercritical and proud of his/her use of logic, perhaps even to the point of categorically dismissing certain actions or norms?

How do you counsel someone who’s always looking for an opinion to guide his/her decisions?

With quick-fix theories and thinking tools

You tell him to get off his high horse and start being actually critical – i.e. to empathetically understand how different people understand and explain the world [(B) Analysis of real world] and critique them while recognising the limits of his knowledge and the normative assumptions [(A) Values/normative theory] underlying his “logic”.

Exodus 20:1-21 – Grace, the Law, and Covetousness

From a sermon delivered by Andrew Reid on 7 August 2016:

Starting in the right place – Grace, then the Law.

[1] And God spoke all these words, saying, [2] “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. [3] “You shall have no other gods before(1) me.

Footnotes (1) 20:3 Or *besides* (Exodus 20:1-3 ESV)

Grace comes first.
